The Causes and Symptoms of Receding Gums

Posted By Szikman Dental Group, P.C. || 24-Sep-2015

If you are over the age of 40, you may have experienced receding gums or heard of others experiencing this issue. This problem is otherwise referred to as gingival recession. When this occurs, the roots and nerves of the teeth can be exposed. However, there are some symptoms you can look out for to help you identify receding gums. Below is a list of these symptoms:

  • Sensitive teeth
  • Tooth pain from exposed nerves
  • Bad breath
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Inflamed gums
  • Bleeding when flossing
  • Bleeding when brushing

Most often, this occurs as a result of poor oral hygiene, but can be caused due to other reasons such as the following:

  • Abnormal tooth position
  • Insufficient gum tissue
  • Overaggressive brushing
  • Dental infections
  • Eating disorders
  • Chewing tobacco
  • Teeth grinding

Additionally, one of the most overlooked causes of receding gums is eating a variety of foods that promote gum recession. Below are some of these foods and an explanation as to how they can affect your gums.

Acidic Foods:

Research shows that bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms grow in acidic settings. These matters can damage the enamel of your teeth, the protective layers, and cause inflammation. In the worst cases, this can lead to gum disease. These foods can include meats, citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits, white breads, pastas made with flour, pickled and fermented food, alcohol beverages, coffee, and teas.

Sugary Foods:

Sugary foods can also be extremely acidic. This means that bacteria will thrive in these types of foods. In addition, sugar promotes cavities and gum disease. These foods can include candy, sweet beverages, donuts, cakes, muffins, chocolate, soda, energy drinks, liquor, white breads, and more. In addition, if these foods are trapped between teeth, a person can suffer from gingivitis and inflammation.

Cold Foods:

If you are already experiencing the symptoms of receding gums, you may experience an increase in sensitivity. If this is the case, it may be best to cut cold foods from your diet. This is because cold foods can cause pain if nerves are exposed. These foods can include ice cubes, nuts, ice cream, refrigerated fruits and vegetables, popsicles, iced beverages, and more.
